Developing Your Business Mindset
Knowing you’re a business owner and acting like one are two very different things. As wellness entrepreneurs you focus primarily on the wellbeing and health of your clients, but what about the health and wellbeing of your business? What about developing the business mindset that will help you get to the next level and help make your business grow?
A business mindset will help you identify the gaps in your business and help you figure out how to handle them. Here are some tips on developing your business mindset and strategies:
1. Reach out: Reaching out for help or advice isn’t a sign of weakness in business, it’s a sign that you want to make your business the best it can be. Get strategic and use the minds and contacts of the people around you to help you avoid the pitfalls and mistakes they made so you can reach your business goals faster.
2. Grow to love selling: Sales is often a dirty word in business, but it’s the bread and butter of it too! Being able to sell from a ‘place of service, not selling’ to your client means you have both a profitable business and serve more people in their health and wellbeing. Selling is about problem solving, so solve the problems your clients have and promote your services to them from that point of view. In that way it’s being of service, not selling to them. Listen to your clients and find ways to help them – that’s selling at its best.
3. Focus on the numbers! If you’re not making profit in your business, then all you have is an expensive hobby. This is particularly true of wellness practitioners who have their client’s wellbeing in mind often to the detriment of making a profit. Developing the business mindset means you know you’re in business to serve but also to make money! Always keep your eye on the numbers and know your incomings and outgoings. Controlling finances is vital to a successful and profitable business.
4. Say Yes and Say No: Say yes to everything at the beginning of your business, connect, help, network, volunteer etc. But as you start to realise the value of your time (be sure to calculate your hourly rate!) you’ll be able to get more strategic about the things you say Yes to, and know when to say No to things that don’t bring profit or productivity to your business. Value your time but know when to help out too.
5. Develop a Growth Mindset: Having a growth mindset will help you develop your business mindset even further. Growth mindset individuals believe character and abilities can develop through dedication and practice. Develop your love of learning and business, see failure or mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow. Treat everything as an experiment - taking it all too seriously will paralyse you and make you hesitant in business. Sometimes you have to take the decision to be both brave and afraid.
6. Develop your sense of productivity: Being ‘busy’ in business isn’t the right strategy – you have to get results. Developing productivity strategies to keep your focus on business goals is the difference between a struggling business and a thriving business. 7. Don’t be afraid to pivot: If your current business strategy or niche isn’t working for you, or you see other opportunities to make your business work for you in similar areas, make the move in that direction. Try it out, be open to new possibilities. Hanging on to an old way of doing things could be detrimental in the long run. Experiment, ask customers what they think, ask mentors for advice. Don’t be afraid to diversify and pivot, your business is constantly evolving. And that’s a good thing.
8. TAKE ACTION. Your business mindset can only grow if you take action in your business and learn from your business decisions. No one starts out with a big business, so start small, keep evolving and take action every day.
